Getting to know our new surroundings in the East Midlands

Since our last post we have been settling into our new home in Leicestershire and not travelling too far afield. That said we have taken the opportunity to enjoy some of the surrounding country side and to visit some of the lovely market towns in our new home county and slightly further afield. Here are some images of what we've come across and enjoyed so far.

Bradgate Park

We are lucky to have Bradgate Park almost on our doorsteps,  perhaps a slight exaggeration as its about 10 minutes away by car. Set in the Charnwood Forest it covers 850 acres and is a magnet for walkers with and without their dogs as well as running enthusiasts. After 8 years living in the flat lands of the Netherlands, which I have to say does have some lovely countryside however it is very flat,  the scenary in Bradgate Park is a wonderful change.

Oakham Castle

Oakham is the county town of Rutland, around 28 miles from Nottingham and slightly less from Leicester. It lies just to the west of Rutland Water one of the largest man-made lakes in Europe. Close by you'll find the very pretty market town of Uppingham which is home to Uppingham School one of the leading British boarding schools.

Perhaps best know by many who visit as being the home to Warwick Castle, Warwick is the county town of Warwickshire. We spent a lovely morning there during Susy's mum's recent visit to the UK.

So whilst we've not travelled too far afield in the first quarter of 2014 we've quickly realised that there is lots to do, see and explore on our own doorstep. Until next time, goodbye for now.
